Overall rating:
Ulm is known above all for its famous cathedral, the tallest in the world. The cathedral was built intermittently, from 1392 to 1890, and is currently about 162 meters high.

If you have the strength and desire, you can climb 768 steps to a height of 143 meters. With a small child, we did not go, since it's the height of a 35-storey building.

The old city is quite large, but built mostly with reconstructed or modern buildings, styled like the old ones. This is explained by the fact that 80% of the city was destroyed during World War II. The cathedral was lucky in this regard, it remained intact.

We liked Ulm, it turned out to be a very pleasant city, with a cozy historical district and an excellent promenade. Stayed overnight at Maritim Hotel Ulm (booking.com). If you are lucky, then can live in a room with a view of the old town.

The most beautiful part of the old city is located around the river Blau.

There are excellent embankments on the two banks of the Danube.

The walls, in addition to their historical significance, also protect against regular Danubian floods.

The observation tower is named after Albrecht Ludwig Berblinger. This German inventor is famous for the fact that in 1811 he allegedly created the first ever analogue of a hang-glider by observing owls. He made his first flight from this wall, but he didn't fly far and landed in the waters of the Danube.

Interesting fact, on the other side of the Danube is not Ulm, but another city, New Ulm. Ulm is in Baden-Württemberg and New Ulm is in Bavaria. This strange administrative division has existed for over 200 years. New Ulm is now built mostly with modern apartment buildings.
