Eltz Castle is one of the most beautiful medieval buildings in Germany. It had never been destroyed or captured. The castle survived both the wars of the XVII and XVIII centuries and the French Revolution, and today it is an excellent example of a medieval castle. From 1960 until the beginning of the 90s it was depicted on the banknote of 500 Deutsche marks.

It was built probably in the XII century for knights guarding the road between Mosel and Eifel. For the first time the name Eltz was mentioned in the document of Frederick I Barbarossa. Nowadays the main tower of the first castle and the Romanesque style building remained. Over the centuries, more and more extensions appeared in the castle.

In the XIX century, Count Karl of Eltz started reconstruction of his castle. From 1845 to 1888 he spent 184,000 marks (about 8 million euros). The restoration was carried out very carefully and preserved historic architectural appearance.

The castle is still owned by a branch of the same family that lived there in the 12th century, 33 generations ago. Eltz family representatives held high government and church positions that saved their castle from destruction. The current owner of the castle, Dr. Karl Graf und Edler Herr von und zu Eltz-Kempenich genannt Faust von Stromberg, lives in Frankfurt am Main. But the castle is open to the public and the owner takes care of its preservation.

The castle is located on a forest glade, on a rocky mountain and surrounded by a river from three sides. Such location enables the visitors to see the castle from all sides and almost from every angle.

There are guided tours in the castle. Opening hours: from April 1 to November 1, from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. The ticket costs €8 (2012), see more information at the official website.

Getting there: By regional trains from Koblenz and Trier to the Moselkern or Karden train stations. From these stations you can walk to the castle (4-5 km). We arrived at the Moselkern station. If you come from Koblenz, go ahead about 500 meters in the train direction. Turn right and go down the Elztal Street, along the Eltz river, looking out for the signs. On a halfway, you will see a hotel with a restaurant. Be sure to put on comfortable shoes, as the second part of the trip will be in the forest. If you are on a car, then you need to pass the Münstermaifeld and Wierschem towns. The parking place is 800 meters from the castle, you can walk or take a shuttle for 1.5 euros.
