Ippenburg Castle is 600-year-old ancestral home of a noble family Bussche-Ippenburg. The descendants live there today, the castle is privately owned, so there are restrictions on visiting.

The castle was rebuilt several times. The first building dates back to the late 14th century. The castle stood until 1811 and was demolished as outdated. The second castle was built in the Baroque style and stood until 1862. In 1862-67 a new modern castle in neogothic style was built. In 1930 it was overhauled, central heating was added and bathrooms were equipped.

The castle is surrounded by a beautiful park full of flowers and unusual sculptures. In 2010 the gardening festival of Lower Saxony was held here. You can visit the park only during the festivals (schedule) or in summer with a group of at least 20 people by appointment.

Getting there: The castle is located on the other side of the Mittellandkanal, 2 km from Bad Essen and 5 km from Bohmte. Unfortunately, there is no train station in Bad Essen. Nearest station is Bohmte. I went to Bad Essen on bicycle from Melle (track) and went back from Bohmte. There are many pointers on the way. Overall trip was about 30 km. The way Melle - Bad Essen is quite difficult, a lot of ups and downs. So better arrive by train at Bohmte. Maps of cycle paths can also be found on this website.
