The Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi Fortress (Akkerman Fortress) is quite far from the main tourist areas, so reserve at least 2 days for a visit. We recommend that you go there together with Odessa. As for us, we visited Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi during a trip to Humorina in Odessa.

The first thing that catches your eye is the huge size of the fortress. This is the largest fortress in Ukraine and, what's more important, well-preserved. During the siege, tens of thousands of people could stay inside.

Exactly this fortress was the first fortress in Ukraine visited by us. Later we understood that almost 90% of other fortresses, castles and palaces of Ukraine are in disrepair. There are great fortresses in Stare Selo and Medzhybіzh, but the Akkerman Fortress is in much better state. This could happen because of the location and small number of tourists.

Overall impressions of the trip were very positive. Nobody looks after you, you can even climb the walls (but it's dangerous). A huge area for walking and plenty of places for photographers - what else is needed for a family day off?

A stunning view of the Dniester estuary opens from the fortress walls. Unfortunately, it's impossible to fully convey the beauty with a camera.

After visiting the fortress we stayed overnight in the Soviet-type hotel nearby. There are not many hotels near the fortress. Besides, the fortress is situated neither on the outskirts nor in the center of town, so finding a place for a dinner turned into a quest. As a result, we found only a mini market, and no cafes or restaurants in the area.

Getting there: By train or minibus from Odessa. Minibuses stand near the central railway station in Odessa. You can also order a trip to the fortress from Zatoka and get there by boat.
