In the city of Gustrow stands perfectly preserved Renaissance castle. Its construction began by Duke Ulrich of Mecklenburg in 1558 on the site of a medieval castle. Due to several fires it was reconctructed several times. As a result the design of the castle contain elements of German, Italian and French architecture.
From 1800 castle turned into a military hospital and since 1817 into a retirement home. In the years 1963-1978 еhe GDR authorities had carried out a complete restoration of the castle and since 1972 it is a branch of the Schwerin Museum. During a visit in 2014 we have seen that the reconstruction resumed. Fortunately only on the small area around the castle.
A distinctive feature of the castle is it's heights. From the side of the garden you can count 9 floors! Given that in the old times there were no elevators it is quite high.
Castle also has an interesting courtyard.
On the south side of the castle is large flowerbed with water channels around it.
Gustrow is a small town, mostly not old. Nevertheless in the center there are several beautiful places.
