Vidraru Dam

N 45°21.96', E 24°37.939'
2017-07-11
Our rating: 4.80
Overall rating:
The Vidraru dam is located in the southern part of Romania's most beautiful road - Transfagarash. Its construction was fraught with great difficulties, about 80 workers died during five years (1961 - 1966).

There are always armed guards near the dam, this is connected not only with the safety of the construction, but also with the fact that there is a huge amount of explosives in the rocks. It was done for purpose, in case of danger the rocks will be exploded to block the canyon with a natural barrier.

The water breakthrough already happened in 1977, when one of the slide valves blocked because of the water infiltrations, and hundred of tones of water washed the downstream localities, destroying several houses and killing a woman

There is a staircase near the dam leading to the viewpoint, over which stands a huge iron sculpture of Prometheus. However, in the summer of 2017 the staircase was closed. Other entertainment - a boat ride along the reservoir or bungee jumping.
