There are several interesting sights in the town of Leer in northern Germany. The most notable of them is the Evenburg Castle  built by Colonel Erhard Reichsfreiherr von Ehrentreuter of Hofrieth (1596-1664), commander of the Dutch regiment in Emden in the period from 1642 to 1650. The castle was named after his wife Eva.

In 1861-62 the building had been almost destroyed and then rebuilt in pseudo-Gothic style. However, it was destroyed once again during the World War II. After numerous reconstructions now the Ostfriesland Education Academy and College for teachers of grammar are located here. In 2006, the castle returned to its neo-Gothic look of the 19th century. Photo before the last reconstruction can be found on Wikipedia. In 2012 restoration work was still ongoing and scaffold could be seen to the right of the castle.

There are a moat and a park around the building. Entrance is free.

There is another sight within a 10-minute walk, Philippsburg Castle. Go to it along Daalerstrasse. The castle was built by Baron Philipp von Wedel in 1730. Is privately owned, so you can look at it only from the outside.

There are other interesting places in Leer, but I will visit them next time.

Getting there: The best way is by train to Leer. There is a direct train from Hannover via Bremen. Next, you need to walk for about 30 minutes. Print the map of the town, for example, this one. Of course there are buses in the town, but they run rarely and departure intervals are not very convenient. Therefore, either walk or take a taxi. If you walk, go on Evenburgalle and continue directly to the castle. The alley is very pleasant, shaded and perfectly smooth. It took me 25 minutes to walk there.
