Palace in Nordkirchen was built on the site of the Renaissance "Castle on the Water" from 1703 to 1734 by Münster bishops from the Plettenberg family. This large baroque palace is located on an island and surrounded by moats. There is a park with many sculptures near the palace. Especially there are a lot of animal sculptures. In the booklets the palace is called "The Westphalian Versailles".
For a long time the palace had belonged to the princely family, and in 1959 it was bought by the government of North Rhine-Westphalia. Nowadays the palace houses the Finance and Economics Institute. Some halls are open to visitors.
Getting there: By train from Dortmund or Münster go to the Capelle (Westf) station, then go by bus R53 to the palace and ask for the Schlosspark bus stop. Entrance to the park is free of charge.
