Since 1705 it was used as a mental hospital. From the 18th century until 1871 inside was a prison and later a hotel. After 1951 there was a children's camp, a hostel and a restaurant, the latter is still operating now. Also there is a large porcelain museum (Porzellanwelten Leuchtenburg) in the castle.
In the 1980s, in the days of the GDR, the castle was planned as a prison for... citizens arrested during protests. 600 places were prepared, a secret radio station, and even a Stasi safe house (Ministry of State Security).
