The island is small, you can't get lost here and you can get around pretty quickly. Because of its size, however, there is a problem of overcrowding by tourists. Especially on the waterfront, where the historic Mangturm Tower (1180), formerly a lighthouse, stands.
Since 1275 Lindau was a free city, but lost this status in 1802, after the fall of the Holy Roman Empire during the Napoleonic wars. A few years later the city was incorporated into the Kingdom of Bavaria. From 1853 to 1856 the railroad to Munich and a new port were built. At the same time the symbols of the city appeared: the Bavarian lion and the New Lighthouse.
The city park is located just over the bridge to the island.
The old town is cozy. We visited only its less popular part, as the number of tourists spoils the whole impression. There are many beautiful historic buildings in the old town that we didn't see, so we recommend coming early in the morning or out of season.
Modern houses can also be found on the waterfront.
