We did not miss the opportunity to stay at the hotel (find it on booking.com). This is especially convenient if you are traveling from Germany to the Netherlands or vice versa. Moreover, we have specially chosen a quiet summer evening to get the best impressions.
Inside the castle looks like a real museum. In order not to spoil the authentic atmosphere the restaurant was built on the water (round building on the left side of the first photo).
The castle was first mentioned 12th century. The square tower dates back to the 15th century, but the round one was built with the original castle. At that time, access to it was only via a rope ladder above the entrance to the dungeon. All other buildings were renovated in the 17th century, when the castle lost its defensive importance.
In the 18th century a park was built around the castle. It is huge, very well-groomed and very suitable for nice walking.
There is a cool maze in the park.
Since the castle is surrounded by water, in quiet weather it creates a magnificent reflection.
At night, the castle and trees in the park are highlighted.
If you do not stay at the hotel, you still can visit the castle. Part of the territory is open 24h. Opening hours of the museum and the park find on the official website.
Getting there: By bus to the stop Schloß Anholt, Isselburg, use bahn.de to find the schedule.
