A rather large castle on the island of Saaremaa, the medieval residence of the bishops of Ösel. The first mention in sources dates back to the 1380s, when an earlier fortress in the area, built by the Teutonic Knights, was extensively reconstructed.
Despite participation in several wars and use since the 19th century as a poorhouse, both the castle and the surrounding fortress are quite well preserved. At the moment there is a museum inside the castle, and the area around has been turned into a park. We were also delighted by the beautiful wooden houses.
