Pidgirtsi Castle is one of the best in Ukraine, but it is much less known than the other ones. Built in Renaissance style in 1635-1640 by Hetman Stanislaw Koniecpolski. At the time of our visit in 2008 there were restoration works and it was impossible to get inside.
85% of the exhibits in the castle are currently stored in the Lviv Art Gallery. They will be returned after the reconstruction ends. Poland financed the creation of the website, where you can see the 3D panoramas of the interior parts of the castle.
The castle looks great from outside. A facade with grand staircase, in my opinion, is the second most beautiful view of the castle in Ukraine after observation deck in Kamianets-Podilskyi. Count Dracula would have been delighted, as were we.
On the north side is the Italian park. And near the road and not far from the castle is a beautiful church. The territory, of course, is abandoned, but it's very suitable for walking. If everything we saw is reconstructed and presented in proper form, Pidgirtsi will be one of the most beautiful places in Ukraine.
In the castle some episodes of the famous Soviet movie "The Three Musketeers" were filmed (video). There are lot of places in the Lviv regionwhere this famous movie was filmed. Here is a video of the castle in the old Soviet movie "Bohdan Khmelnytsky".
Getting there: By bus or minibus from Brody to Zolochiv, ask the driver to stop in Pidgirtsi. The castle is located 2 km from the Kyiv - Chop highway, between Olesko and Brody.
