On the very edge of the spit, which is annually increased by 10 meters, it is possible to see the meeting of the Skagerrak Strait (North Sea) and the Kattegat Strait (Baltic Sea). Water on both sides has different properties, in particular temperature and salinity. Probably this interesting phenomenon is the main reason why the spit is constantly changing its shape and has grown by 1 kilometer in the last 100 years!
There are two museums near the parking: art gallery and the bunker museum. Also nearby is a high lighthouse with a viewing platform at the top.
It is curious that in 1858 when the lighthouse was opened it stood in the middle of the spit. But over the past 150 years, the geography of the cape has changed so much that now it stands on the very edge. As seen from the satellite image, the coast has to be expanded and strengthened with special breakwaters to save the lighthouse.
To the edge of the spit you can walk 1 kilometer
or use this funny train.
It is better to go on foot, as the nature is beautiful and you can see the military bunkers.
There is also an information that the spit is the best place in Denmark for bird watching, as birds rest here during migration. However we did not see them and we did not see fur seals and other sea creatures as well, though they can be observed here.
Getting there: parking N 57 44.335 E 10 38.069. The cape can be reached by bus S1 from the center of Skagen, the schedule can be found here, your stop is Grenen (Skagen).
