Schoeningen Castle and Park (Schloss Schoeningen)

N 52°8.42', E 10°57.902'

Our rating: 6.60
Overall rating:
A former hunting lodge built by Duke Welf Magnus I. (Welfenherzog Magnus I.) in Schöningen in the first half of the 14th century.

In the early 16th century, the complex was transformed and expanded into a palace and served as a widows' residence for the three duchesses of Brunswick. The three women had a great influence on the development of the castle and significantly transformed it in the Renaissance style. However, some of the layout of the original castle can still be found today, e.g. in the underground there are remnants of the old palace.

In 1661 Duke Augustus II ordered the demolition of the fortifications and the arsenal. In 1733, a particularly high-profile guest visited the palace: the Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich, later King Frederick the Great.

From 1815 the residence lost its importance and became an agricultural estate. Reconstruction began in the 1980s and in 1996 the castle was opened to the public. Entrance to the grounds is free, the castle has a hotel and restaurant.
