The castle was founded in the 14th century, at that time, as a fortress. And got a modern look in the 15-16 centuries.

It is curious that in 1793 the city was inherited by Empress Catherine II, so it moved to the Russian crown. Such situations were possible before the reunification of Germany, during the time of individual kingdoms and independent cities. Catherine received the city after the death of her brother, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst.

In the former times marriages among the ruling circles of different countries and kingdoms were popular. Thus, the Russian emperor easily found the new owner of the city after the exile of Napoleon’s army. In 1818, he passed it on to his relatives from the Duchy of Oldenburg. And they made Jever Castle their residence.

Since 1921 the museum has been located in the castle, and cultural events are regularly held in the territory. The castle is surrounded with a well-groomed park, where peacocks and geese roam freely.

Naturally, the castle is a symbol of the city and you could see it on the logo of a famous beer. The brewery can also be visited.
