We stopped in Portocolom to spend the night and to look at the resort on the east coast of Mallorca. Residents of the city are sure that Christopher Columbus was born here. Hence the name. This is a beautiful, relief town, where you can take a good walk, but we cannot recommend it for a beach holiday.

Portocolom has the largest natural harbor in Mallorca with the most important fishing fleet. There are many traditional fisherman houses left, as well as one of the best preserved old centers.

We noticed two problems. Firstly, there are no beaches, or rather there is one very good beach Cala Marçal (N 39 24.593 E 3 15.491). By the quality of sand and the transparency of water, we would compare it with the Montenegrin Plavi Horizonti. There are several small beaches, but this, of course, is not what you expect from a beach resort.

The second problem is the lack of parking. Even near the beach it is not easy to find a parking place. You can park somewhere in the center (N 39 24.898 E 3 15.567) or on the outskirts and then go on foot.

However, if you find a hotel with parking, there are many picturesque, forested beaches in the vicinity, they can be reached by car.

We spent the night at Orange Colom - Seaside Apartments (booking.com). It has a good location, new buildings and great views. But there was also a problem with parking. Even in December, we found it difficult to find a place, and during the high season it will be simply impossible.

The windows overlook the landmark of the town - the lighthouse. You can walk along the rocky shores and find the best view. There is also a picturesque 2-kilometer pedestrian path from the center to the lighthouse.

The lighthouse was built in 1861 and in 1918 its height was increased by 6.5 meters. In 1965, an electric lamp was installed and the height was increased by another 10 meters. The lighthouse is fully automatic and closed to tourists.
