Kenko (Qenko, Q'inqu) is a sacred place of the Incas, was found in 1934. Like most Inca constructions, its purpose is not known for certain. Archaeologists suggest that it was an important ceremonial center where sacrifices and mummifications were carried out. There is also evidence that the place was used for astronomical observations and calendaring. Kenco now looks like a pile of stones, expect rather interesting than beautiful ruins.

Confused. Why does the carved stone in that 'cave-like' space look like a separate piece of rock from the wall it sits next to? As if they carved 'behind' it as well? Are they different rock types? Was that carved piece placed there? Is it cracked naturally from the wall and then carved? It's hard to make out in a 2-dimensional photo, but would be interested in some personal insight.
