Wadi Rum is one of Jordan's wonders. It is a desert with unusual "lunar" landscape. Everything here is unusual - color of sand, rock formations and even the sky. People come here to watch wonderful views at sunrise and sunset.
Recently, Wadi Rum has been filmed in many popular movies, such as Transformers 2, Prometheus, and Red Planet. In 1962, Lawrence of Arabia which won seven Oscars had been filmed here.
If you are coming for a day, then buy a trip in order not to have problems with getting there. You will be brought to the base camp, then you will board a car of the local guide (usually an old dilapidated jeep) and go to see the desert. Then you will be brought back to the base camp, from where the driver will take you to the hotel.
By default, you are offered a 3-4-hour tour. But you can discuss other options that are available here.
You can spend the night in the desert, but only in a camping tent. However, such accommodation is not cheap: from $50-60 per night (contacts). Don't forget clothes that will protect you from the sun, sunglasses and a hat.
Getting there: The base camp is located in about 60 kilometers from Aqaba. Minibuses from Aqaba and Wadi Musa (Petra) are available, but they are not regular! In Wadi Musa, the best option is to ask about the trip in advance at the hotel. The bus will pick you up next morning. Buses from Aqaba go depending on the number of passengers. Therefore, if you decide to go on your own, better take a taxi. One-way trip from Aqaba costs approximately $35. A trip from Amman will cost you $80-120. Here is some additional information.
We recommend buying an individual tour. It's really the best and relatively cheap option.
