Despite the fact that Siracusa is smaller than Catania, the city looks much nicer, which is not surprising, since it was restored by the EU. It is known primarily as one of the largest ancient cities in the world. Others know it as a home city of Archimedes, the famous antient mathematician, physicist and engineer.

We did not visit the ancient city. If you want to visit, find here the information about opening hours and ticket prices.

We went for a walk at the medieval Siracusa, on the island of Ortygia. From above it looks very impressive.

An interesting place: asphalt was removed and the street was turned into museum due to ancient ruins.

In contrast to the old town, many new houses are in poor condition and covered with protective nets.

The huge dome turned out to be modern church. Be sure to visit the territory with many beautiful flowers and unusual trees.

Getting there: The easiest way is from Catania by train (http://cp.pt) or bus (http://www.interbus.it). Syracuse has a railway station in the city center and an Interbus bus station nearby. The nearest airport is in Catania, there are direct buses from the airport. AST buses (http://www.aziendasicilianatrasporti.it) to Palermo (4 hours) depart from Piazza della Posta on Ortygia island.
