An ancient town, one of the elements of the defensive system of the Republic of Siena. It got its present appearance after the XIII century, when the city wall, the donjon and the church appeared.
With the fall of Siena in 1559, it fell under the power of the Medici and lost its importance. In 1777 Monticchiello became part of the municipality of Pienza. Nevertheless, in the church of Saints Leonardo and Cristoforo there are many frescoes of the Siena school of the XIV and XV centuries.
The town is very small but nice and there are not many tourists, we recommend.
