The rocks near the town of Ballenstedt on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains. There are two of them: Großer Gegenstein and Kleiner Gegenstein ("Big Gegenstein" and "Little Gegenstein").
The Großer Gegenstein can be climbed by stairs and steps cut out in the rock. In 1863 Prince Anhalt ordered a cross to be placed on top, which was replaced in 1993. From the top there is a view of the Harz Mountains.
