During World War II, Bad Zwischenahn was home to the largest Luftwaffe airbase in northern Germany, the Adlerhorst Military Airport in Rostrup. From here Luftwaffe pilots made their attacks on the Netherlands and Great Britain. At the moment a golf course has been built on the territory of the base, but the contours of the runways can be recognized on satellite maps.
The town is a resort, with many spas, mainly for retirees, and a famous psychiatric clinic founded in 1857. It is also home to the Rügenwalder Mühle company, which produces pâtés and meat products that we buy regularly and recommend to you. Look for the products with a red mill. And the mill itself you can find here.
First we sat at the Strandcafé restaurant on the lakeside. There is a playground next to it, so you can come to the restaurant with children.
And afterwards we walked in the resort park which is located along the lake, so it's impossible to get lost. In the park you will see several old buildings and a mill. All of them are original, were brought from neighboring towns, and installed in the park. For example, the Spieker restaurant building.
If you pedal fast, a trickle of water will fly out.
Two beautiful villas (53.185917, 8.008056).
Then we went back to the parking lot and drove to the Park of Gardens. It can also be reached on foot from the resort park, it is about 3 km along the lake. The Park of Gardens is also located on the territory of a former military base. In 2002, the first garden exhibition in Lower Saxony was held here.
The area of the park is 14 hectares, it consists of 44 individual gardens, you can also call it an exhibition of landscape design. There is also a good children's playground and a restaurant.
In 2014, an observation tower was added.
