In 2005, in Magdeburg the Green Citadel of Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser was completed. We already visited some of his buildings, so couldn't miss this one. I won't be surprised if many tourists find it the most interesting place in the city.
The building is very unusual and is built in the heart of the city. Hundertwasser was originally asked to change an ordinary house of GDR times, but with the development of the idea it was decided to construct a completely new building.
The building has 900 windows of 300 different types, so each window is presented only 3 times. Imagine how difficult it was to invent and create 300 types of windows!
The building has 150 pillars, all of which are different, too.
The building houses the hotel (42 rooms are designed individually), theater, offices, shops, kindergarden and 55 apartments. The building received its title due to the large number of trees that grow in the yard, on the floors and on the roof. Some of the trees grow right out of the apartments! People who rent these apartments are taking care of the trees.
Hundertwasser had some ideas even for the underground parking. Each parking lot has its own picture and all pictures are different.
In the garage there is a wall where you can leave a message.
When you look at this house, it seems that apartments inside have unusual design, too. In fact, they are ordinary and very comfortable. Here's flat of 90 square meters and 3 rooms. Rent of this apartment costs 1,000 euros per month.
Inscription "Hundertwasser" is one of little known elements of the house.
There are guided tours, although they are available only in German and you won't see a lot.
Getting there: The Green Citadel is located in the heart of Magdeburg, near the Cathedral.
