Hildesheim is a city 25 kilometers south-east of Hannover. It was badly damaged in 1945, during the Second World War. The downtown had almost disappeared and was rebuilt after the war in a completely different style. Fortunately, most of the major churches, two of which are now under protection of UNESCO World Heritage, were restored shortly after the war. This is the Cathedral of Santa Maria (Dom St. Maria) and St. Michael's Church (Michaeliskirche).
In 1980 reconstruction of the historic center started. Some old buildings around the main square were demolished and replaced with copies of authentic buildings. Despite the fact that the downtown is not original, we've highlighted Hildesheim as a must-see place in Germany. At the moment, the Market Square is one the most beautiful squares in German small towns. Compare with the photo of 1900 - everything is the same.
Getting there: Either by regional train or by bike from Hannover.
