Inguri Dam

Our rating: 7.80

On the way to Svaneti, you will definitely pass the Inguri Dam. Make a little detour and visit this place. It's the largest hydroelectric power station in the Caucasus, built in 1978. The height of the dam is 271.5 meters, and by this parameter it's the 4th largest in the world. For example, the world-famous Hoover Dam is 50 meters lower.

The dam is located in the zone of the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict and therefore is not working at full capacity. The area is protected, but it's possible to come close to the dam, there's even an observation deck. Just tell the guards that you are a tourist.

Near the dam live several stray dogs. One of them can run up to you, fall head over heels and lay until you pat him. We gave him a sausage :)

Getting there: The easiest way is to get to the town of Djvari by minubus from Zugdidi. From there to the dam there's about 7 kilometers. You can go on foot or find a local with a car. You can also get to the dam by any minibus that goes to Mestia.
