Puerto Villamil is a small village on the Isabella, the largest island of the Galapagos Islands. Despite the fact that Isabella is the biggest and most interesting of the islands, it's not easy to get here, so the local "capital" is not growing in size. Here live no more than two thousand people, no ATMs. Note, that you cannot see the main sights of Isabella if you stay in Puerto Villamil, you need to go on a cruise.
What to do here:
- relax on the beach, which is everywhere
- take a walk for a whole day to the volcano Sierra Negra
- visit the islet Las Tintonteras on the boat
- visit a tortoise breeding center
- walk on numerous hiking trails, for example to the lake with flamingos or to the Wall of Tears
- visit the swampy parts of the national park (Wetlands)
- ride a bike, there are several routes ($15 per day, $3 per hour)
Unusual Catholic Church
On the islands few times we've seen dogs husky.
The only cat that we saw on the Galapagos Islands
Getting there: Every day runs a boat Puerto Ayora - Puerto Villamil, start at 14:00, ticket price is $30. Back to Puerto Ayora boat goes at 6am. The trip lasts 2 hours and because of the waves, it's not the most pleasant trip. There is a small airport near the village where planes fly to the islands of Baltra and San Cristobal, but not regularly, only when there are passengers. Tickets cost about $160 one way and $260 return, you can take 10 kg of luggage for free. The name of the airline is Emetebe, find here schedule.
