In Korets you can explore three interesting objects: castle ruins, Holy Trinity Monastery and Church of St. Anthony.
Castle ruins are located near the center of the town. The castle was built in 1386 by Prince Theodore of Ostrog. In 1550, the new owner Bogush Koretsky built additional fortification. During the XVII-XVIII centuries the castle was rebuilt in the palace style. In 1780, Prince Jozsef Czartoryski performed the last reconstruction. In 1832, the castle was burned down and since that time has been standing in ruins.
There is a dungeon under the castle, which can be visited even without a flashlight. In 2005, a viaduct leading to the ruins was restored.
The main attraction of Korets is the Holy Trinity Monastery, founded in 1620. This is one of the nine monasteries in Ukraine that were not closed during the Soviet times. The Prioress, by chance, was familiar with somebody from the top, and this fact helped to save the monastery and renovate it in 1969-1970. Behind the monastery you will find a grave of Anna Andre, to whom the most famous Russian poet Pushkin devoted several works.
In front of the monastery stands a monument to Taras Shevchenko. In fact, it is a monument to Lenin, but because he was dressed in rather old clothes and people laughed at the monument, the head was replaced during one night :)
Another interesting place is the Church of St. Anthony. Located on the other side of the river, it can be seen from the high bank on which the castle stands, if you look to the right.
The church is restored completely outside and partially inside, but looks beautiful. The head here is young, active and cheerful Valdemar from Poland. He needs to go to another place after the renovation, but the locals don't let him go :)
Getting there: By bus from Rivne (the schedule is available only in Ukrainian), Zhytomyr or Kyiv. Easily accessible by car, the town is situated on the Kyiv - Chop highway.
