The Tarakaniv Fort can hardly be called a fortress or a castle. This is a huge fortification, unique in Ukraine. At least we haven't seen any similar objects of this size and preservation. In the 19th century, it was built by imperial government to protect the Kyiv - Lviv railway.
The construction has a rhombus shape with sides of about 240 meters. Outer walls of the fort are now almost indistinguishable from the outside. But if you get to the inner area, everything looks pretty good. Don't miss the opportunity to get inside through a 100-meter long tunnel.
Despite the fact that the stone walls of the fort have been preserved, I don't it's a good idea to climb them. If you really want it, you can try to find a guide in the nearest village. You can also take the contacts of the guide in the Dubno Castle.
Getting there: It is not easy to find the fort. See the map below, we drove along the route 3. We turned from the Kyiv - Chop highway in the Tarakaniv village near the cemetery, drove to the railway and turned right onto a dirt road. After that we drove about 800 meters to the uphill and then turned left. After 100 meters you will see a tunnel through which you can reach the fort.
