Castle Ettersburg is located outside Weimar, but is included in a large list of Weimar's objects of the UNESCO World Heritage. Known primarily as a summer residence of the Duchess Anna Amalia from 1776 to 1780.
In 1845, thanks to the efforts of Prince Hermann von Pückler Muskau, the forest on the other hand of the ravine was cleared and appeared a fairly wide alley. Previously it was a hunting trail and now called "Pückler's glade" (Pücklerschlag). From that point you can make very nice pictures of the castle.
The glade ends with a forrest edge. During construction of the Buchenwald concentration camp there was a trail between the edge and a camp. It has recently been expanded into a passable Zeitschneise, or "time lane", connecting Ettersburg Castle with Buchenwald. We walked along it from the camp to the castle.
The complex consists of three buildings: Old Castle, New Castle and a church. There is also a small park near the castle.
The castle offers tours, but only on certain days and hours, and only in German. Information is here.
Getting there: Take the bus number 6 from the train station in Weimar. Attention! It does not pass through the stop which is located directly beside the castle and stop at one of the following: "Am Keßling, Ettersburg" or "Wohnheim, Ettersburg". Schedule to / from these stops, as always, check in advance on bahn.de.
