A small half-timbered town, very conveniently located near the autobahn. In fact, that's why we visited it, we were looking for a place to rest on the way.
The town is quite old, in the central square there is Walpurgis Church (Walpurgiskirche) and excavations under it showed that an older church existed here in the 9th century.
The city has about 400 half-timbered buildings, the most famous of which were built in the 16th century, during the heyday of architecture. These are the Town hall (Rathaus, 1512 - 1516).
Wine House (Weinhaus, 1538)
And the Wedding House (Hochzeitshaus, 1564 - 1571)
During the Thirty Years' War (1618 - 1648) the city was partially destroyed and fell into disrepair. Fortunately, the half-timbered center was preserved and restoration began in 1967. In 1975, Alsfeld was chosen as one of the European model cities in which restorations were carried out.
