Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya were established in 1821. They are located in a bend of the largest river of Sri Lanka Mahaweli and are surrounded by water from three sides. The gardens are beautifully decorated and divided into several zones. They are famous for their collections of orchids, palms, herbs and medicinal plants. The garden also has trees that were planted by various well-known people such as Yuri Gagarin, King George V, Tsar Nicholas II.
In the center of the garden on the trees lives a huge colony of flying foxes. Under the trees stand locals that offer to catch one of them for a dollar :) Monkeys are running around everywhere. The greatest interest among visitors are the alley with drunken trees (Cook's pine alley) and giant ficuses.
