El Escorial is a monastery, palace and residence of the Spanish King Philip II. On August 10, 1557 the army of Philip II defeated the French army at the Battle of San Quentin in Flanders and during this battle was destroyed the monastery of St. Lawrence. This saint was a native Spaniard. Philip II decided to erect a monastery in honor of the St. Lawrence. New palace complex had to personify strength of the Spanish monarchy and the Spanish arms, recalling the victory of the Spaniards at San Quentin. Construction lasted from 1563 to 1584.

Visits are possible and that is the main purpose why tourists come here. Inside is not just a museum, the monastery is more like a palace. The most impressive are giant empty corridors with huge paintings, as well as the crypt and library. Unfortunately, the photos inside the forbidden.

Opening times and fares see on the official website http://www.patrimonionacional.es/real-sitio/monasterios/6172.

It is possible to walk in the gardens around the monastery.

We flew over it on the drone to get a better angle. Only from the top it is possible to see how big this complex.

If you have a car, it makes sense to visit an interesting place, which is located 6 kilometers from the monastery. This is so-called "Chair of Philip II" (Silla de Felipe II, N 40° 34.083 ', W 4° 9.165') - a large stone in the form of a chair, which according to legend, was used by the king to watch the original building of his monastery.
