Fort Canning Park

Fort Canning Park is located in the heart of Singapore, on the slopes of a 60-meter hill. Here was a fort with a rich history and a park named after it. It was the center of the ancient state that was located on these territories. Subsequently many Malay kings ruled from the hill and the place was almost sacred to Singapore residents at the time of arrival of the British. Many artifacts from the history of Singapore are preserved here, for example, guns. However, they never fired and stand as a decoration :) The fort itself is not preserved, it was demolished in 1926 during the construction of a strategic water tank on the top of the hill. Only the huge gates left.

The park is quite unusual, it's too good to be an ordinary park. This is not surprising, since founder of modern Singapore Stamford Raffles built his residence on a hill almost 200 years ago and created the botanical garden around.

From that time to the present day the headquarters of various military organizations are located on the hill. However, they do not interfere, and we recommend to find some time and take a walk in the park.

Here you can view information about the park and download PDF files with a map and description. There are files of three types: colonial history, ancient history and vegetation of the park, choose what you like more. We were more interested in colonial history.

Getting there: You can climb the hill from multiple locations, the easiest way is either from Clark Quay or from the Hill Street. There are several metro stations nearby, we recommend to come to the City Hall station and then walk to the stairs that lead to the Raffles Terrace, where he built a house.
