An artists' colony that played an important role in German art in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. First mentioned in 1218, it became widely known in 1899 when young artists such as Fritz Mackensen, Otto Modersohn, Hans am Ende, Heinrich Vogeler, and Paula Modersohn-Becker moved here to live in nature and tranquillity.

Over the years, the village of Worpswede became a well-known centre for art, with galleries and exhibitions.

We don't know any of these artists, so we just took a walk around the village. The main street, Bergstrasse, where the car park is, is quite interesting.

We also took a walk through the park to the Die Käseglocke cottage (entrance here 53.218556, 8.929778). The house was built in 1926 in the shape of a cheese cover, hence its name. Inside, there is now a museum of folk art (Museum für Worpsweder Kunsthandwerk). There is an admission fee, but you can freely enter the area around the house.

We went even further and reached the Heinrich Vogeler Museum (53.215667, 8.932306), located in a former farm building, which the artist bought in 1895 and gradually expanded.
