Schwerin is the smallest of the cities that are the capital of their lands, here lives less than 100 thousand people. Nevertheless, perhaps because of the capital status, it looks pretty solid. Mainly due to the large number of lakes and beautiful castle.
Schwerin Castle is the jewel of Northern Germany, definetely one of the top 5 castles of the country. It was built in the years 1845-1857 by order of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II. The castle stands on an artificial island and looks extremely photogenic from almost any angle. Especially in the evening.
Castle combines several architectural styles and numerous spiers beautifully reflected in the water of Schwerin Lake. Near the castle is a dock where you can go on a boat trip and see the castle from the water.
You can go around the castle on the island. Behind located a beautiful orangery, which now houses a restaurant.
There is also a grotto
Inside the castle sits Parliament of Mecklenburg - Western Pomerania. There is also a museum. The interiors of the castle worth a visit.
The castle, by the way, has its own ghost "Peterman", who is walking at night in these halls :)
Near the castle is a large park with many sculptures, fountains and interesting design decisions.
There are no medieval houses left in Schwerin, the only really old building is the cathedral.
In addition to the lakes around the castle, the city has other lakes and a lot of promenads.
