The neo-Gothic palace was built in 1834-1840 by Elson and Guito for a friend of the Emperor Alexander I, the Minister of Education of Russia, Alexander Golitsyn. In the late 19th century the palace was bought by Countess Panina. This estate was visited by many famous Russian poets and writers, such as Maxim Gorky, Anton Chekhov, Ivan Bunin, Fyodor Shalyapin, and in 1901-1902 Lev Tolstoy rested here.
