Pyrogovo is the Kyiv Museum of Architecture and Rural Life in the open air (Skansen). Many historical and ethnographic regions of Ukraine (mostly west, north and center) are presented on the vast territory of the museum. As in any skansen, here you can look at copies of traditional residential and household buildings typical for ancient times of Ukraine.
There are also wooden churches here, one of which dates back to 1742, and wooden mills, which unfortunately are in poor condition.
Pyrogovo is perfect for long walks in the fresh air. The area offers stunning views, especially in autumn. However, it's better to come here early in the morning or on weekdays, because there are lots of visitors during the weekend. But despite this Pyrogovo gives very positive energy and the walks are relaxing.
Besides, folk festivals are held here during Ukrainian holidays such as Christmas, Easter, Ivan Kupala etc. We were in Pyrogovo in July on Ivan Kupala holiday, where we made flower wreaths and put them into the water. For more details on this holiday, click here.
You can also buy ethnic souvenirs and taste Ukrainian dishes in a local cafe.
Getting there: The museum is located within Kyiv, so it can be reached by public transport such as minibus #156. Its initial stop is near the Besarabska Square, at the exit from the PinchukArtCentre. The minibus goes past the Lybidska, Demiyivska, Golosiyivska and Vasylkivska metro stations.
