Chortkiv is a small town in the south of the Ternopil region. We went there to see the neglected castle ruins. It seems that this is a common problem for all old castles in the Ternopil region. Moreover, there's a diesel fuel station inside, so it's not a touristic place.
The castle is well-preserved but not picturesque. Currently the ruins are of absolutely no interest to a photographer, as there are no good viewing points around.
June 2014
National reserve "Castles of Ternopil" is now taking care of the castle. Territory inside and outside the castle is cleaned, but inside you can get only on weekdays from 10 to 17 :(
Chortkiv is a beautiful town. Having spent 10 minutes near the castle, we went for a walk along the streets. Just 50 meters from the castle there is a new Protection Church with well-maintained territory where you can get water from the source.
The main attraction of Chortkiv is the neogothic St. Stanislaw Cathedral. There are not many such beautiful cathedrals in Ukraine.
Among the old buildings in the center you can find wooden trade arcades and the Town Hall. Long time ago a lot of movies were filmed here.
There are some problems in the town: no normal park, no cinema, only an old Soviet cultural center.
There are some wooden churches in Chortkiv, but unfortunately we didn't know about them during our visit.
It's best to take a taxi or a private car from the bus station to the downtown, but you can walk as well.
Getting there: By train or bus from Ternopil. Buses run every 30 minutes (80 km). By morning bus from the Stryiska bus station in Lviv (4.5 hours, 220 km). By train or bus from Ivano-Frankivsk (100 km).
