Unlike other popular resorts, there are almost no huge five-star hotels here. The city is quiet with small hotels and apartments.
Fethiye has a big beach called Çalis, though the water there can be muddy. There are much more interesting beaches around:
- Boncuklu beach
- Ölüdeniz beach
- Günlüklu beach
- Gemiler beach
There is a standard Turkish promenade with stores and restaurants along the beach. Note the Lidl parody :)
Fethiye has an excellent promenade, more than 8 kilometers long, with various art installations and playgrounds for children.
What we particularly like is the old town. In the evening, it's probably full of people, but in the morning we walked around with pleasure. It's located about here 36.621790, 29.109604, the dot is where the umbrella street is.
In 2019 a new big park Sehit Fethi Bey Parki was opened. We were primarily interested in the large playground, but if you do not have children, there is still a lot of interesting things in the park. It's especially beautiful at sunset.
If you want to see the city from above, you can do it near Fethiye Castle (36.618131, 29.111974). As of 2022 the observation deck has been abandoned, but the view is beautiful, we recommend it.
The castle ruins are fenced off.
A few hundred meters away, you can see the Lycian tombs built 2400 years ago, but we were more interested in the views of the city. And the tombs can be seen in Demre.
Getting there: excellent parking in the city center, on the promenade, 36.624752, 29.115292. You can travel by bus from many major cities: Marmaris, Bordum, Antalya, Izmir and even Istanbul (14 hours). The nearest airport is Dalaman, from the airport you can get to the city by bus (1 hour).
