Örebro is a beautiful city located in the center of Sweden. The main attraction is the Örebro Castle, founded in the 13th century. Here in 1540 the owner of the castle King Gustav Vasa set the hereditary monarchy in the country. The castle received a modern look in 1625, when the king's son Duke Charles rebuilt it. After the loss of strategic importance the castle was used as a prison.
The castle stands on an island in the city center, the main streets and places of interest are located around it. The center is very picturesque thanks to the river. Since 1935, the castle is a national monument. Inside you can find a museum, offices, a restaurant, a hotel and even a school.
One kilometer to the east from the castle is Wadköping, an open-air village museum (on the map) with houses of 18-19 centuries. Here you can download a PDF map of the museum.
Another attraction is located to the north of the train station. This is a 58-meter high water tower Svampen (map, svampen.gastrogate.com). The tower holds 9 mln liters of water and has a restaurant and an observation deck at the top. The tower is open to visitors from May 1 to October 31. Its copy is built in Al-Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.
