We visited the island with an overnight stay in Valle Gran Rey. This town is located at the other side of the island, so in the first day we drove over the whole island on one road, and the next day - on the other. There are several apartment-hotels there, in one we stopped (booking.com).
If you have time, you should come here at least for two nights. Quiet, calm, beautiful and few tourists.
In the evening people come on the waterfront to meet the sunset.
Getting there: by ferry from Tenerife and La Palma islands. There are two ferry companies: Fred Olsen (https://www.fredolsen.es) and Naviera Armas (http://www.navieraarmas.com). There is also an airport on La Gomera which has connection to Tenerife-North.
