The University is located on a hill, so it is necessary to go up through the old town.
Funny local tradition
Office building is built over the antient buildings which were found during the construction. They are preserved.
The university, founded in 1290, is the main city attraction. It's available for tourists, find here opening times and prices. The main interest is a library.
It is possible to climb the university tower.
Not far from university, next to Joao Paulo II square, located university botanical garden. Unfortunately, it's not working on Saturday, during our visit.
The city stands on the Mondego river. A great place for a stroll.

The territory on the other side of the river reminds us that we are still in Portugal.

On the other side is also one secret place - Quinta das Lágrimas, which is located in the eponymous luxury hotel. It's a small garden and a fountain, which is associated with the legend. The entrance is here, the ticket price of about 2 EUR.

We stayed at the Hotel Oslo (booking.com), which has a great roof terrace overlooking the old town.
Getting to Coimbra: By train to Coimbra-B station, which is 2 kilometers away from the main station Coimbra, situated in the city center. All major trains stop only at Coimbra-B station, but your ticket allows you to take the local train to Coimbra (Coimbra-A).
