Heeswijk castle

The original castle was erected by the Lords of Heeswijk on this site in 1080. In the 13th century they lost control of the castle and it changed owners many times thereafter.

Between 1370 and 1450 the castle was rebuilt into a large square fortress. At the beginning of the 16th century a new rebuilding followed, into a late Gothic residence with defensive elements. From 1649 the castle lost its defensive features and was rebuilt into a Baroque residence.

At the moment the castle is in excellent condition. It was restored in 2005 and now offers a glimpse into the culture of the mid-19th century. Weddings are organised in the armoury and congresses and presentations are held in the carriage barn.
