During our trip to Italy we had to choose accommodation on the Garda lake. Malcesine is the obvious choice. It has gorgeous scenery and sunset, restaurants on the beach, old town, castle and cableway. Schedule and prices of the cableway are here. Unfortunately, we didn't visit mount Baldo because of the weather. During high season you can wait in line for a long time, so come earlier.

Getting there: There's a picturesque road around the Garda lake. It is narrow, and we found from reviews that traffic jams are possible. But during our trip in June everything was fine. Distance to the nearest major cities: Verona - 96 km, Milan - 184 km, Venice - 214 km. Nearest airports: Brescia - 86 km, Verona - 101 km.
The nearest railway station is Rovereto (25 km), then continue by bus of Trentino Trasporti (schedule). On the southern banks of the lake there are also Desenzano and Peschiera railway stations. Bus #162 (schedule) connects them with Malcesine.
In summer you can also use a ferry or a pleasure boat from different towns around the Garda lake. For example, you can arrive by train to Peschiera del Garda and continue from there on a pleasure boat. The timetables can be viewed or downloaded here or here.
