Since the 19th century, it has been owned by representatives of the ancient aristocratic clan Thurn und Taxis.
Since 2003, the castle and the park are open for tourists.
A rich collection of antiques has been preserved inside.
We liked the most the terrace in the princess's room, a beautiful and cozy place.
View of the ruins of an old castle of the 11th century, which also can be visited.
There is a park around the castle.
During the Second World War, a bunker was built in the castle. It is very solid, first we went down here
And then it turned out that this was not even half the depth of the bunker.
View of the cliffs in the direction of Trieste.
A 2-kilometer Rilke Trail passes along them. As you might guess from the name, it is named after the famous modernist poet Rainer Maria Rilke. In 1912, while he was in the castle, he began writing Duino Elegies, a series of 10 deeply philosophical and mystical poems, considered to be his greatest creation.
There are a number of viewing platforms on the trail constructed during the Second World War.
They offer the best views of the Duino castle.
We spent the night right next to the castle and near the entrance to the trail, at the Hotel Al Pescatore (booking.com).
Getting there: Bus 44 to Duino from Piazza Oberdan in Trieste (timetable). For parking check somewhere along the street here N 45 46.410 E 13 36.262.
