The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the symbols of Italy and Europe. It had been built for a long time and was completed in 1360. The tower's tilt began during the construction in 1178, caused by an inadequate foundation on the ground: too soft on one side to properly support the structure's weight. Because of this the tower gained worldwide fame. It's worth noting that the Leaning Tower of Pisa is not the most "slanted", especially after the works that were finished in 2010 and after which the slope decreased from 5°30' to 3°54'.
Today the whole Square of Miracles complex is a very popular tourist destination. You should come here not only because of the tower, but also to look at hundreds of photographers and models who shoot their unique pictures with the tower :) It's possible to get to the top of the tower, in this case you should buy the tickets in advance here.
Getting there: There's 2 km from the central train station to the Tower of Pisa and 500 meters from the Pisa S.Rossore station. The Pisa Airport is located almost in the city, about 1.5 km from the central train station.
