Monemvasia consists of a medieval city surrounded by a fortress wall and a fortress on top of a mountain. And all this is located on an island of unusual shape which was formed as a result of an earthquake.
Due to the successful location the Byzantines built a fortress here a long time ago, back in the year 550. Although this location attracted rivals and during the history Monemvasia many times was captured and destroyed by the crusaders, Venetians and Ottomans.
Like other coastal fortifications this one took an active part in the Greek revolution of 1821. The defending Turks were less fortunate here than in other places: after a three-month siege the rebels seized the fortress and massacred all the defenders.
For a long time the island was abandoned until 1970 when it was connected to New Monemvasia with a dam. There are many hotels and restaurants on both new and old towns.
The old town is perfectly preserved and is a vivid example of a medieval settlement. We walked here in the morning and were completely alone. The fortress above can be reached only on foot.
In a small area there are several dozen of churches.
And, of course, a lot of colorful cats on the streets.
Getting there: parking along the road on the island N 36 41.184 E 23 03.252. If it's occupied, then you can park right in front of the dam N 36 41.181 E 23 02.357.
