The remains of one of the largest and oldest castles in the South Harz region. The castle was built in the early 13th century and served as the residence of the Counts of Honstein, who played a significant role in the medieval history of Thuringia.

At different periods of its history it was used as a fortified residence, an administrative center and later as a prison.

By the beginning of the 19th century, the castle had fallen into disrepair and gradually turned into ruins. Today, parts of the outer walls, towers and courtyard have been preserved. The place is popular with tourists and antique lovers, offering picturesque views and a medieval atmosphere.
