A small town near Hanover. Here you can find the castle, the park near it, and a small old town.

Neustadt am Rübenberghe was founded around 1200 by Count Bernhard II. von Wölpe and is mentioned in a document of 1215 as "nova civitas". The same name remains to this day, in German Neustadt means "new town".

In 1505, the 35-year-old Duke Erich I. von Calenberg made this place his second residence, though his castle burned down in a fire in 1563. His son, Duke Erich II the Younger, began the reconstruction in 1573, during which the representative Landestrost Castle in the style of the Weser Renaissance was built.

In addition to building the castle, he expanded Neustadt into a city fortress, typical of the 16th century. The castle and the city were surrounded by fortifications with sharp-angled bastions. They can be seen during a walk in the castle park. The city took part in the Thirty Years' War and was captured, but not due to the damage, but because of a lack of supplies for further defense.

The duke renamed the town to Landestrost, but after his death, the inhabitants returned the original name. The reason was the non-acceptance of the enormous cost of large-scale construction, during which many people died.

After the castle park, we took a walk in the old town. Despite the fact that it remained virtually intact after the war, the old town is not particularly interesting, although we found a few beautiful historic buildings.
